Q1. Open the bonnet, identify where you would check the engine has sufficient oil.

Ans: identify the dipstick and state you take the dipstick out, clean it, reinsert the dipstick and take it out. The oil level must be above minimum mark and below the maximum mark.

Q2 show me and explain how you would check that the power assisted steering is working before starting the journey.

Ans: start the engine apply gentle pressure on the steering wheel it should be light and result in a slight but noticeable movement if the steering is heavy then something is wrong.

Q3 open the bonnet, identify where you would check the engine coolant level and tell me how you would check that the engine has the correct level.

Ans: identify the header tank and state / show the level should be above minimum and below the maximum mark.

Q4 show me how you would check the parking brake for excessive wear.

Ans: state by applying the parking brake (handbrake) it should secure itself i.e. the car should not move when applied and is not at the end of its working travel.

Q5 identify where the windscreen washer reservoir is and tell me how you would check for level.

Ans: identify the reservoir and state you should be able to see water either through the bottle or when you lift the cap.

Q6 open the bonnet, identify where the brake fluid reservoir is and tell me how you would check that you have safe level of hydraulic brake fluid.

Ans: identify the brake fluid reservoir and state the fluid must be above minimum and below maximum.

Q7 show me how you would check that the direction indicators are working.

Ans: apply the indicators or hazard warning switch and check all indicators by walking round the vehicle.

Q8 tell me how you would check the brake lights are working on this car.

Ans: switch the ignition on press the brake pedal and ask someone to check or reverse to a reflective surface such as garage doors and see the reflections as you press the brakes.

Q9 show me how you would check the headlights and tail lights are working.

Ans: switch the ignition on switch the headlights on and walk round the vehicle checking headlights and tail lights are working.

Q10 tell me how you would check the brakes are working before starting a journey.

Ans: when applying the brakes they should not fell spongy or slack. Brakes should be tested as you set off. Vehicle should not pull to one side.

Q11 tell me where you would find the information for the recommended tyre pressure for this car how tyre pressure should be checked.

Ans: to check how much recommended tyre pressure use a manufacturers guide and to check pressure use a pressure gauge when tyres are cold.

Q12 tell me how you would check the tyres to ensure that they have sufficient tread depth and that their general condition is safe to use on the road.

Ans: there should be no cuts or bulges, tread depth should be 1.6mm minimum across the central 3/4 of the breadth of the tyre and around the entire outer circumference.

Q13 show me how you would check the horn is working.

Ans: demonstrate by pressing the horn.

Q14 show me how you would set the demister controls to clear all the windows effectively, this should include both front and rear windscreens.

Ans: set the relevant controls including fan, temperature, and air direction. Also use front and rear windscreen heater controls.

Q15 show me how you would switch your headlights from dipped to main beam and explain how you would know the main beam is on whilst inside the car.

Ans: operate the switch for the main beam to come on (a blue light should come on to indicate main beam is on) and then operate the switch again for the main beam to go off and the dip to stay on.

Q16 show me how you would switch on the rear fog lights and explain when you would use them.

Ans: switch the fog lights on and show the examiner the indicator on the dash board which indicates the fog lights are on and explain the fog lights would be used when visibility is seriously reduced e.g.) in fog so drivers behind you can see your vehicle. You must turn them off when visibility is improved so you avoid dazzling drivers behind you.

Q17 tell me how you would make sure your head restraint is correctly adjusted so it provides the best protection in the event of a crash.

Ans: adjust the head restraint so it is just above your eye level and close to the back of the head.

Q18 show me how you would clean the windscreen using the windscreen washer and wipers.

Ans: operate the windscreen washer and wipers

Q19 tell me how you would know if there was a problem with your anti-lock braking system.

Ans: if the anti-lock brakes were faulty the abs light would come on in the dash. And around the entire outer circumference.
